Michael Ammermüller clinches first win of the seasonStuttgart. At the Sachsenring, Michael Ammermüller (raceunion Huber Racing) scored a lights-to-flag victory. The German won round eleven of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland on Saturday ahead of Nick Yelloly (Team Deutsche Post by Project 1) from Great Britain. The third podium spot went to Larry Ten Voorde (Team Deutsche Post by Project 1) from the Netherlands. “Fastest in practice, qualifying and the race – it’s a perfect weekend so far. Nick Yelloly managed to trail me over the entire race today, so I knew I couldn’t afford to make the slightest mistake,” said Ammermüller.
During qualifying, Ammermüller snatched pole position on the 3.645-kilometre Sachsenring circuit. The 31-year-old got off the line well at the start and settled in at the front of the 20-strong field. Yelloly took up the race from the third grid position and promptly overtook Porsche Junior Thomas Preining (A/Konrad Motorsport) with a catapult start in the first lap. Over the course of the race, the 26-year-old and Ammermüller pulled clear of the rest of the pack. Yelloly stuck close to the bumper of the seasoned Porsche specialist, who couldn’t shake off the Briton. After 17 laps, Yelloly crossed the finish line just one second shy of Ammermüller. “It wasn’t a perfect race for me, but my vehicle had an excellent setup. Everything is wide open in the championship, and that was precisely my goal,” stated Yelloly.
Dutchman Ten Voorde (Team Deutsche Post by Project 1) took the flag in third place. Starting from fifth on the grid, the 20-year-old lost his position to Dennis Olsen (Konrad Motorsport) right at the beginning. Ten Voorde stuck close to the Norwegian and was rewarded in lap eleven: At the end of the 780-metre finish straight, Ten Voorde used the slipstream to sweep past both Olsen and Preining. This meant that Ten Voorde finished the race in his 485 hp Porsche 911 GT3 Cup as the best rookie. “That was an action-packed race. I spontaneously recognised the chance to overtake, then things got very close again but I kept a cool head,” said Ten Voorde.
Porsche Junior Preining tackled the race from the third grid spot and saw the flag in fourth. “It was a very intense race. Unfortunately my tyres only really reached their optimal temperature in the second half of the race, otherwise I could’ve done better,” said Preining. Behind the youngster from Linz in Austria, his teammate Olsen finished on fifth. “My start was really good, but unfortunately I still didn’t managed to get past Thomas Preining. I take up Sunday’s race from third and, of course, I’d like to win,” admitted Olsen. Sixth place on the rollercoaster racetrack went to David Kolkmann (Team Deutsche Post by Project 1) from Germany.
Wolfgang Triller (Huber Racing by TriSpa) had plenty of reason to celebrate on the Sachsenring. The German concluded Saturday’s race as the best driver in the amateur category and thus secured an early B-classification title with 141 points. “It’s a fantastic feeling! Thanks to my decent lead in the amateur classification I didn’t have to risk everything. That was my big advantage. I’m absolutely over the moon for the team – we’ve all contributed to this success,” said Triller.
The current situation in the overall standings: Olsen from the Norwegian town of Våler continues to lead the series after eleven races with six victories and 217 points to his credit. Yelloly from Solihull in England ranks second with 195 points. Ammermüller has earned 151 points and sits third. The best driver in the rookie category is Ten Voorde, with the young racer holding 226 points.
Round twelve of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland takes off on Sunday at 11.45 hours.
